Yair Golan, leader of the left-wing Democratic Party (an alliance of Labor and Meretz) and a former IDF general, caused controversy Tuesday with remarks suggesting Israel is engaging in excessive violence, including “killing babies as a hobby.”
In an interview with Kan radio, Golan warned that Israel risks becoming a global pariah, similar to apartheid-era South Africa, unless it changes course. “A sane nation does not wage war against civilians, kill babies as a pastime, or aim to displace populations,” he stated.
He also criticized the government, calling it “filled with vengeful, immoral figures unfit to lead during a crisis,” adding that their actions threaten Israel’s survival.
To defend his declarations amid backlash, Golan has accused the government of enabling the extremist agendas of ministers like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich. “We’ve seen Gantz’s approach of appeasing Netanyahu fail,” he said. “This war fulfills their dangerous fantasies. If we let this continue, we’ll become an outcast state.” He praised the IDF as moral and heroic, while condemning the government as corrupt.
Golan called for an end to the war, the return of hostages, and the restoration of Israel’s values as a Jewish, democratic, and Zionist state.
