Keir Starmer Resigns: UK Prime Minister Steps Down After Two Tumultuous Years

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned after less than two years in office, paving the way for Andy Burnham to become Britain’s seventh leader in a decade.

Starmer’s departure triggers a leadership contest as Labour faces an uncertain future ahead of the next general election

On 22 June 2026, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation, becoming the sixth Prime Minister in a decade to leave office early. His departure came less than two years after his landslide victory in the July 2024 general election, amid mounting pressure from within the Labour Party.

In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said: “The question my party is now asking is whether I am the best person to lead us into the next general election. I have heard my parliamentary party’s answer to that question, and I accept it with an open heart”. He confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision, in accordance with constitutional convention.

A Transition Period

Starmer will remain as Prime Minister on an interim basis until a successor is chosen. Nominations will open on 9 July and close on 16 July, with a new leader expected to be selected before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.

Andy Burnham: The Frontrunner

Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, is the frontrunner to succeed Starmer. He was sworn in as a Member of Parliament last week after winning a by-election and has confirmed his candidacy for the leadership. Wes Streeting, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, has endorsed Burnham, boosting his chances of winning the leadership.

A Party in Transition

Starmer’s resignation comes at a critical moment for the Labour Party. The party’s grip on voters has weakened recently, negatively affecting the investment outlook for Britain. The leadership contest will shape Labour’s direction ahead of the next general election, with the party seeking to regain public trust and present a coherent vision for the country’s future.
