Hyundai Rotem has secured a $487 million railway maintenance contract in Morocco, building on a major train supply deal previously signed with the North African country.
A Major Infrastructure Investment
South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem announced on Friday that it has won a railway maintenance contract in Morocco worth 748.2 billion won (approximately $487.3 million). The contract was signed with the Moroccan National Railway Office (ONCF) in Rabat on June 18.
The signing ceremony was attended by Lee Yong-bae, CEO of Hyundai Rotem, and Mohamed Rabie Khlie, head of the Moroccan railway office, along with other officials. This contract builds on a major train supply deal previously signed between the two parties.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
This significant infrastructure investment reflects the growing economic cooperation between South Korea and Morocco. Hyundai Rotem has been expanding its presence in the African market, and this contract further solidifies its position as a key player in the region’s railway sector.
The deal comes as Morocco continues to upgrade its transport infrastructure in preparation for major events, including the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The maintenance contract will ensure the long-term reliability and efficiency of Morocco’s rail network, supporting the country’s economic growth and connectivity.
A Growing Partnership
Morocco has been actively investing in its railway infrastructure to boost trade and tourism. The partnership with Hyundai Rotem is expected to enhance the quality of railway services and create job opportunities in the country.
The contract also highlights the increasing role of South Korean companies in Africa’s infrastructure development. Hyundai Rotem’s commitment to the Moroccan market signals confidence in the country’s economic prospects and its strategic position as a gateway to Africa.
